OZ 3.5.4.2-rc2 released

Marcin Juszkiewicz September 2nd, 2006

Third version of OpenZaurus with 2.6 kernel support poodle (sl-5600) and tosa (sl-6000) only (no collie support in this RC).

I will update collie config and then release bootstrap-images for it (no GPE or OPIE images for this machine).

2006.09.05 UPDATE: OPIE images recreated - should work now.

Download from EWI

Small changelog:

  • sound on poodle improved
  • touchscreen on tosa improved - no more ‘heartbeats’ instead of lines
  • some WiFi cards which got orinoco_cs loaded will get hostap_cs now

It is experimental release to get wider testing of our work and to show all of you what we did during last months. Support for those machines needs some love and hard work, but machines are far more usable then they were under 2.4-crapix kernel.

Release notes are available already in wiki. Feel free to add content.

Test it and report bugs, fixes, ideas:

All feedback goes to openzaurus-devel@lists.sourceforge.net mailing list.

Machine related stuff is provided as preconfigured feed.

Flashed the OPIE flavor of the rc2. stuck at “Welcome to Opie” screen. No response to tap. WIFI light blinks. Reboot doen’t help. Can’t proceed.

After flash, my tosa boots until at “Welcome to Opie” screen which asks to tap anywhere on screen to start touch screen calibration. Touch screen gives no response. It just hangs there. Suspend/Resume by pressing power button, then “Fn” + left arrow to get booting message. The last booting messages are:

    OpenZaurus 3.5.4.2-rc2 tosa tty1
    tosa login:

Does this mean that Opie screen hangs there because waiting for proper login (user, password)?

By the way, at this point. If I typed in “root” at tosa login prompt, I could login as root. Then if I typed “ls”, I could list the contents of the current directory, then the system really frozen there.

Joey, apparently you are bad at hints: file bugs in the bugtracker instead of posting comments here.

Koen, bear with me with one more comment. First time tried OZ so please forgive my ignorance. I flashed my tosa with the rc1 just days again and was really impressed with the speed and feel of the OZ. I flashed my tosa again with the rc2 mainly for the “heartbeat” touchscreen fix.

As an observation, although I flashed the Opie flavor, there seems no opie.conf in the /home/root/Settings. Instead, there is a qpe.conf there. Is it the way should be? Now I will be quiet :-)

The same here.. Flashed it the Opie version and when is starting Opie it crashes when it asks to tap a key anywhere on the screen. I downgrade again to rc1.

    I am using poodle

opie does not start, freezes at tap anywhere screen on first startup (i think touch screen doesnt work…)

    but gpe works fine ;)

I followed Alejandro Bitran’s path. It really gets stuck hard at “tap anywhere”. So RC1 came up again okay, but without upgrades. I did “ipkg upgrade” and it decided not to let me have a GUI any more. So I’ve gone from an RC1 with bad touchscreen to a semi-brick. (All I have is the “loading bootsplash. Use alt-leftarrow to see the boot messages.” screen.)

How do you convince it to show you the GUI screen in this case?

So RC1 didn’t work with collie and now RC2 isn’t even for collie? That’s not fair. I want 2.6 on my Zaurus as well! :(

  11. rover_ornaon 06 Sep 2006 at 19:11

    Sooo… when RC2 for collie?
I think alex is right - even without SD, we want to test 2.6 on collie!
Most people don’t have time to build it themselfs.

Hi there.. just installed the new fixes for the rc2 version Opie flavor. It rocks! I will installed some packages and try it for a while. Thanks again to all the developers.

Ugh. Okay, time to get the C1000…

  15. Marcin Juszkiewiczon 11 Sep 2006 at 20:21

Ez: use usb0 not usbd0 - but first ‘modprobe g_ether’ module.

  16. Ezon 12 Sep 2006 at 11:38

oh ty i will try ;)

  17. Jaretton 12 Sep 2006 at 23:03

I should note that the OE people have started kicking back bugs and saying “consult your OpenZaurus distribution developers.” Apparently they don’t want application bugs submitted to them.

  18. Martijn Rason 13 Sep 2006 at 18:53

Do you have a timeframe for releasing GPE and OPIE images for the collie?
