OpenZaurus 3.5.4.2 RC1 released

Marcin Juszkiewicz August 10th, 2006

Second version of OpenZaurus with 2.6 kernel for:

  • poodle (sl-5600)
  • tosa (sl-6000)
  • collie (sl-5000/5500)

is available from http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/tmp/hrw/3.5.4.2-test/rc1/

Image changes:

  • collie OPIE image got PIM and Bluetooth apps removed
  • poodle/tosa OPIE images got Qpdf2, Konqueror, games and few other things removed
  • poodle GPE image got Sylpheed removed (unusable on such small screen)

Collie does not have working SD/MMC and we do not know when it will have it supported. Chip which control SD/MMC is not documented so to get it working under 2.6 someone would have to do some reverse-engineering work on 2.4 binary driver. Our kernel team work on getting other models fully supported.

It is experimental release to get wider testing of our work and to show all of you what we did during last months. Support for those machines needs some love and hard work, but machines are far more usable then they were under 2.4-crapix kernel.

Release notes are available already in wiki. Feel free to add content.

Test it and report bugs, fixes, ideas:

All feedback goes to openzaurus-devel@lists.sourceforge.net mailing list.

Machine related stuff is provided as preconfigured feed.

    Sweet !
I’ve been using the 2.6 on Tosa since some weeks now and it works like a charm :)

Any word for SD on Collie? Still tied up in the 2.4-only binary module?

  4. Rick Seymouron 08 Aug 2006 at 23:48

To get the poodle to connect to a linux desktop
    modprobe
    g_ether (on the pda)
    cdc_subset (on the pc)

does anyone know the new values for hotplug? is it possible to auto bring up the usb0 device?

Qtopia looks so much better with the increased font res (still randomly wont suspend)

Please note that your / is completely!!!!! filled!!!!! so make sure you uninstall a few things

  5. Marcin Juszkiewiczon 09 Aug 2006 at 15:04

I already changed a bit images content:

    • poodle/GPE lost sylpheed (not usable on QVGA)
    • poodle/OPIE lost many things - 5.7M of space freed

if someone has suggestions what to add/remove then please write to openzaurus-devel mailinglist.

    Hello,

at First thx for all the work for Openzaurus i love it ;-)

But, why is no procmail in the feed?
And why does fetchmail not understand ssl?

It ist possible to to put procmail and fetchmail-ssl in the feed.

“Sylpheed removed (unusable on such small screen)”

I use Sylpheed on my collie - it’s perfectly usable. Just run it once over ssh -X and set some small font sizes etc. Surely it would be possible to package a usable default sylpheedrc?

i update my poodle to 3.5.4.2/gpe but when opening it says:

    WARNING

You are running the wrong kernel!

    you are running 2.6.17-3.5.4.2-rc1
    i expect kernel 2.6.17-3.5.4.2-rc0

    running this combination is unsupported

i will sleep for 1 minute now. use the chance to reboot the device andflash the proper kernel now!

What should i do and how?

  10. Ezon 18 Aug 2006 at 15:50

and i checked the system info, it says version 3.5.4.1 not 2, can u check out the files please?

Similar to EZ for me installing on Collie. GPE boots up and asks me to touch the crosshair to calibrate the touchscreen but no input does anything at that point, it’s basically dead. Opie on the other hand doesn’t get that far.

ln: /etc/resolv.conf: No space left on device

  12. Dow Hurston 21 Aug 2006 at 05:06

Don’t worry about the GPE kernel mismatch. Marcin has posted that is the same kernel in both rc0 and rc1 so you can let GPE continue. I found that suspend from the menu locked the keyboard and touchscreen though… Has anyone else found this? WIFI config for a Linksys card was real easy thru the GUI, and confirmed in the shell. The look and feel settings menu is nice but colors seem washed out a bit. The Keys and Buttons settings menu would not open for me. I’m running as root now just for initial convenience since I’m new to GPE. It’s been 3-4 years coming for a modern kernel for the Poodle so I am very excited!!

I see the same rc0/rc1 Warning that Ez sees on boot.
I see this with both GPE and OPIE.

You are running the wrong kernel!
    you are running 2.6.17-3.5.4.2-rc1
    i expect kernel 2.6.17-3.5.4.2-rc0

    GPE looks a bit rough.
The touchscreen did not calibrate correctly.
It acts as if the it were calibrated to were the outside corners of the screen actually are, and not where crosshairs said to touch.
Perhaps related to the problem above??

    OPIE works much better.
    Touchscreen calibrates fine.

  14. Ezon 22 Aug 2006 at 10:26

    Yes i can use it.
But if the sound scratches on poodle will be solved, that will be great ;)

    Hi! Great work on OpenZaurus!

I’ve installed OZ 3.5.4.2-RC1 on my Tosa, which seemed to work fine. However, I can’t seem to activate the networking. There’s a comment on the wiki that says: ” wifi config need removal of usbctl (or new version of it)”. What does this mean exactly?

    Thanks!

  16. Sebastian Reinfeldton 25 Aug 2006 at 16:25

I have the same problem (activating networking)! I ve found out that the module is NOT loaded from the beginning, after modprobe it is there, but bringing up wlan0 or eth1 it says, no such device… What to do?

  17. A. Wintereron 26 Aug 2006 at 20:53

Using a SL-6000L I flashed 3.5.4.2-RC1 (opie) using an SD card. Flashing went well, the device rebooted properly. The system runs much smoother compared to the original SharpROM. Having real windows now is a whole new experience on a PDA.

    What did not work:

    • During boot a kernel mismatch was found …-rc0 vs. …-rc1, but the system continued after one minute.

    • Calibration did not finish (all cards were removed), the screen did not react to the fifth (center) target. Had to reset. I could calibrate the screen later.

    • Screen artifacts at cursor location or near moved objects (windows) in blue/yellow color (bug 490).

    • WLAN and USB do not seem to work.

    What I’m missing:

    • German translation of programs. I planned to give a Zaurus CL-3200 to my father on christmas, but without german translation this is a no-go.

    • Applet to set the desktop background image

  18. A. Wintereron 27 Aug 2006 at 07:32

On my SL-6000L touch screen input gives random positions between correct input positions. Re-calibration did not cure this.

This happens in all applications. Therefore pressing buttons not always works out, because the position of the touch might be read as outside of the button. The problem is more visible when selecting a line from a list. Then the erratic input makes the cursor jump some line down or up. The sudden position change then is interpreted as multi-line selection. The best way to see the problem is to use Drawpad or some other application which shows the position of the cursor in fine resolution. Drawing smooth figures (horizontal or vertical “eight”) is impossible. The line is growing “spikes” coming from the erratic positions.

I’ve flashed my 5500 from a Sharp ROM to 3.5.4.2-rc1 and got the kernel mismatch and then:
ln: /etc/resolv.conf: No Space left on device
Then it hung totally - same as wdingus

I did get the bootstrap to work (after realising that the ‘contacts’ key is the alt) by pressing alt-left and logging in.
However the ‘fn’ key doesn’t work so I can’t type very much to try and get altboot working. (It complains that there is no altboot-2.6.cfg)

  20. Hoehreron 27 Aug 2006 at 17:33

Nice. Can’t wait for the final release.

And I too would like to know if SD will work under 2.6?

  21. Ezon 28 Aug 2006 at 07:42

Yes there is 2 important problem, 1;sound problem(poodle) 2;Network problem.

But this is the fastest version on poodle ever ;)

  22. zenyattaon 29 Aug 2006 at 09:03

I would also like to know more about collie 2.6 SD/MMC support (both status and prognosis). Please…?

  23. Alejandro Bitranon 30 Aug 2006 at 05:00

    Hi there,

I installed the poodle version on my Zaurus SL-5600. I tested Opie and GPE and it seems Opie works faster and smoother. About the sound.. I had the same problem, but if I suspend and then reactivate, the noisy sound disappear leaving just a single beep. Im having problems when trying to update software, but I will try to fix that. I also own a nokia 770 and I must say that is quite improved the new version of Openzaurus.

    Regards,

    Alejandro.

I’m fairly certain from past readings on forums and here that the SD/MMC port on collie will never be supported, as Sharp hasn’t found it fit to divulge this information.

Please correct me if I’m wrong (and as an SL-5500, I do hope I’m wrong).

  25. xfzeon 01 Sep 2006 at 20:02

just updated to 3.5.4.2RC1 and it’s just great… speed… new bootsplash… all good =) I just got spooked when the usb networking didn’t work as it used to… but nothing a few modprobe’s wouldn’t solve ;)

i’ve read back there someone asking about SD working on 2.6… well it works as hell =P I’ve tested: 512MB SD, 512MB MMC, 256MB SD/wifi combo (only the storage works though) and i even tested an 256MB RS-MMC from my cellphone (using an adaptator obviously)

I’ll gladly offer up some disk space/bandwidth if you point me to where I can rsync from. I current rsyn with hentges.net for 3.5.4 and 3.5.4.1, but there’s nothing in there for 3.5.4.2 yet. Email me or post a comment on my blog @ http://divbyzero.com.

  27. Marcin Juszkiewiczon 11 Sep 2006 at 20:20

Nick: I will rsync them to hentges.net
