OpenZaurus 3.5.4.1 release

Marcin Juszkiewicz July 6th, 2006

The OpenZaurus Project is proud to present a new release of its free Linux software environment for Sharp’s Linux-based Zaurus PDAs.

OpenZaurus 3.5.4.1 supports clamshell Zaurus models and includes about 13,000 packages ready to install. The non-clamshell models can use the software feeds from 3.5.4.1 to update their base system.

Additional release highlights of the 3.5.4.1 OpenZaurus release include:

  • Opie 1.2.1
  • GPE 2.7
  • WPA support
  • Linux kernel 2.6.16
  • Keymap corrections for all machines
  • Fixed keyboard repeat
  • Lots of Bluetooth base system improvements
  • drivers for USB WiFi dongles

Englightment images will get provided later - we had some build problems with them.

The release supports the following Sharp Zaurus models:

  • c7×0 (C700, C750, C760, C860, SL-7500)
  • akita (SL-C1000)
  • spitz (SL-C3000, SL-C3100, SL-C3200)

Release work would not be possible without the OpenEmbedded buildsystem which took most of the work from our shoulders.

You can help to speed up development by donating money and/or devices to our developers. Compared to other open source projects we receive very few donations, although we spend a lot of our precious spare time and deliver lots of good work. So if you are regularly using OpenZaurus, consider donating developers.

See the Release Notes for important notes before you install OpenZaurus 3.5.4.1. Also see Installation instructions.

Release can be downloaded from our mirrors:

What happened to ‘e-image-core’? It was available in rc4, any particular reason for dropping it?

    Amazing. But:
    1. oz/opie tries to mount my sd card with 1 partition as a whole card, not partition.
    2. Where is gui to mount/umount sd?
    3. How to install cyrillic environment? I need fonts to display and keyboard layout to enter.
    4. oz/opie don’t see USB and won’t connect z to main computer.

    I use SL-C860.

Kudos on a great replacement for the default Sharp ROM. I just bought my first Zaurus last month (C3200), and decided quickly that I wanted something better than the out-of-box install. Had a few minor issues with a few of the configuration applets, but the great documentation in the wiki certainly helped. Keep up the good work!

Apparantly there were problems with it, so while it’s not being built right now, I haven’t seen any ‘official’ notice that it’s been dropped entirely. That would be sad. I too was really looking forward to it.

  5. rmrfchik: cyrylic? OPIE has it by default. Under GPE you need to remove Vera font and install DejaVu instead (ttf-dejavu* packages). Then also install Russian glibc stuff.

Games are not sized for the C3200 screen dimensions. Checkers puts
part of the board under the menu bar, billiardz just screws up the
screen, patience has unplayably tiny cards displayed. Word games has
teensy tiles. FreeNoteQT starts up OK, but does not display text
correctly. Core PDA apps all work & look great!

Also… I’m not a Linux user, but would love to have a port
of the nmh mail program(s). If I had this, I could move my native
desktop mail environment and carry it with me always!

Thanks in advance to any kind soul who could include a port.

Is there a known irda keyboard that will work with this version on a sl-c1000? Thanks for the great job openzaurus!

Hey, what happened to this page, it’s no longer linked from the main news site. Is 3.5.4.1 released or is it not?

By the way, where do I report bugs about OZ? In the OESF forums? I have some, which I’d like to report and help to have them fixed.

  10. Outsider: which page?

3.5.4.1 IS released, is available to download.

And bugs should go into OE bugtracker - that info is in Release Notes (which nearly noone read :(

i think outsider (and myself as well) was wondering why the release didn’t make news on the front page. it’s link in the current release sidebar but the latest news is the hardware donation.

i know i’ve been reading the front page every day waiting for 3.5.4.1 to be released and just noticed today it actually was :p

Okay, what am I doing wrong with WiFi?

    Akita, 3.5.4.1 release, Linksys Wireless-B CF (WCF-12)

Card is showing as eth0; wlan0 is disconnected.

On GPE 802.11 runs perfectly and I have great network connectivity. The DHCP log on my firewall shows an IP assignment.

On Opie I can scan for networks, see them but apparently do not get an IP address. DHCP is enabled and the interface is set to be automatically brought up. The 802 access point log shows the Zaurus associating with it, but the firewall log shows no DHCP assignment for the Zaurus.

    Any suggestions?

I’m new to the Zaurus and have just bought a C3200 mainly because i want to start playing and developing for OZ.. I just have one question… why does the latest release not install to the flash area?

Id rather have my core root image in flash and then mount partitions on the HDD… or have i missed a reason why thats stupid?

Thanks for OZ!! I look forward to learning it and hopefully helping out if i can.

OpenZaurus is installed to microdrive instead of flash because:
    - ext2/3 on hdd is faster then jffs2 on flash
    - no problems with space (hda1 can be sized by user)

  20. Kwangon 18 Aug 2006 at 10:12

Where can the original update for the Zaurus SL-C3200 be found? I messed up in the install. Didn’t fdisk the hdd before flashing. So I need to flash the original zaurus rom back on. And then I will fdisk hdd and reflash with openzaurus. Thanks.

Hi,i wish to install it in my zaurus. Now i have a cacko, with a 35 root partition.I ve read in the FAQ that openzaurus opie need a oringal partition table to install it.
