OpenZaurus 3.5.4 release plans

Marcin Juszkiewicz January 9th, 2006

OpenZaurus 3.5.4 will be build by Michael ‘Mickeyl’ Lauer when we resolve all build problems. Decision who will be Release Manager are nearly taken and it looks like I (Marcin ‘Hrw’ Juszkiewicz) will be that person.

Current plans:

  1. build bootstrap/opie/gpe images for all machines
  2. test images on several machines
  3. build ‘world’ and prepare feeds
  4. build any extra images (xfce, e17 for example)

For testing I need voluntaries as I have only collie (sl-5500) and husky (c760) available. Such people will get access to images from 2. point but will need to provide bugreports with info what is not working (fixes welcome ofcourse). If some bugs will get fixed then new images could be created.

Decision about images other then bootstrap/opie/gpe is not yet taken - probably they won’t be released as they are not wide tested.

OpenZaurus 3.5.4 will be released with 2.4.20 kernel for SL-Cxx00 machines. After release we will prepare another release for clamshell devices (c7×0 and cxx00). This will be named 3.5.4.1 and will contain 2.6.15 kernel with ALSA sound.

UPDATE: Many people wonder why at all we are going to release OpenZaurus 3.5.4 with 2.4.20 kernel for Cxx00 instead of going to 2.6 for it. The main reason is that 2.6 support is not widely tested yet - we know that it works on spitz (sl-c3000) or borzoi (sl-c3100) but it was not so tested on akita (sl-c1000). And users have more SD/CF cards and other stuff then we can test for working.

UPDATE: Due to lot of problems with 2.4.20 on cxx00 machines we decided to not release 3.5.4 for those machines. It does not makes sense to release 3.5.4 with crappy cxx00 support and then lose again our reputation before some weeks later we could have 3.5.4.1 with proper cxx00 support.

I would be volunteer, having a C1000… but as I understand, there may not be much interest in testing 3.5.4 on the C1000, if much of the novelties will be in 3.5.4.1 …

Anyway, if you want me, I’m here ;)

  2. Hrwon 10 Jan 2006 at 11:15

What about users who will prefer to stay with 2.4.20 kernels? And testing 3.5.4 allow us to fix non-kernel things for 3.5.4.1 and next releases.

  3. Markon 10 Jan 2006 at 18:31

    hi,

I can test the images on my SL-C3100.
I’m also interested in testing an image with a 2.16 kernel, too.

  4. Benpion 10 Jan 2006 at 18:40

    I can test on a SL-6000.
But … how to contact you ?
Well, I’ve included my email adress on this post, hope you’ll can reach me.

  5. coredumpon 10 Jan 2006 at 19:15

    @Olivier Berger

Trust me, 3.5.4 will run very nicely on a C1000.
One way or another, you have my word for that =)

  6. al_doon 10 Jan 2006 at 20:25

I haven’t a lot of spare time but I’ve a c-3000… I whould be glad to give it a try.

  7. Igor Con 11 Jan 2006 at 01:13

I have an SL-5600 - I can test 3.5.4 for that device, feel free to contact me.

  8. Giovannion 11 Jan 2006 at 11:27

I got a Tosa (sl6000), I’d like to help in testing.
I’m already using 3.5.4rc on that machine.

  9. Hrwon 11 Jan 2006 at 12:14

I will contact all of you when we will have images to test. I have all your emails.

    Thx for such fast reply.

  10. David Sheckleron 11 Jan 2006 at 17:34

I’d also like to install a 3.5.4 image on my SL-C3100.
    Thanks!

  11. Thierry GRAUSSon 11 Jan 2006 at 18:30

I have a C3100, currently running 3.5.4rc. I can test it and give feedback.

Oh, I have seen that the 3.5.4rc boot from the hard-disk, not using the internal 128MB flash. I think that it would be better if the core system was on the internal flash, and all the other extra apps the user wants to install would go on the hard-drive.

With the current configuration, my C3100 is like the C3000 (Ah ! no, there is more RAM on the C3100, so it is not exacly the same).

Oh, and it is really not a problem to test it, as there is nothing more than the 3.5.4rc test system currently on my C3100.

  12. Chrison 12 Jan 2006 at 17:57

Well, what about a release with an updated 2.4.32 kernel ?

  13. Florian Ehingeron 13 Jan 2006 at 04:58

Hi if there is still interest I have de SL5000. I hope you will also prepare an image for this old model. Please let me know if I can help you in testing.

    Flo

  14. zeigerpuppyon 13 Jan 2006 at 10:48

I am interested in testing the 2.6 kernel on the 3100
Particularly interested in getting ALSA going (patience!). I am hoping to get the PDAudio card working on the Zaurus 3100 http://www.core-sound.com/pdaudio-cf/9.php

  15. Hrwon 13 Jan 2006 at 12:32

Chris: If you will be brave and will update 2.4-crappix up to 2.4.32 then we will release with that version. Sharp/Lineo kernels has low quality and noone wants to maintain them. Also upgrading to any other version then 2.4.18 (older Z)/2.4.20 (cxx00) means lack of SD/MMC support.

    Florian: We will support SL-5500

Zeigerpuppy: 2.6 for Cxx00 will be in 3.5.4.1 not before. If you want to test current development kernel you need to contact with kernel maintainer.

  16. jaduncanon 14 Jan 2006 at 03:00

I have a SL-C3000, and an Ambicom wifi card. I’m very happy to help test, please mail if you still need people.

  17. Hrwon 14 Jan 2006 at 09:18

jaduncan: as I wrote in comment 9 - I will contact each of you when images will be ready.

  18. Folkerton 14 Jan 2006 at 12:55

I own a SL-5600 and am willing to test.

  19. Juanon 15 Jan 2006 at 01:29

    I also havw a sl6000 and 5500 Can I do some test

  20. Daniel Steenon 16 Jan 2006 at 04:42

I have a spare 5500, and can do any testing that you like as I’m not currently using it. I don’t mind installing things that “probably won’t work” if that would help as well.

  21. Adamon 16 Jan 2006 at 09:30

I have a 5500 and I’ve been tracking OZ changes for a while. I’d be interested in testing if you still need victims for this platform.

  22. Matton 16 Jan 2006 at 18:56

If you still need testers for the C1k, I’m game..

  23. andrew yateson 16 Jan 2006 at 22:48

I have a 5500 and would like to test 3.5.4.

  24. jaduncanon 17 Jan 2006 at 08:57

Hrw: Do you have a guess for timescale? If it’s likely to be very soon I’ll start backing up data etc.

  25. Keith Matthewson 17 Jan 2006 at 09:16

    Guy’s,
I am always happy to test on my SL-6000 tosa machine. But at the moment the prism2 problem (Bug # 399) is a show stopper for me as I need the WIFI capability.

  26. Mattion 17 Jan 2006 at 09:18

I’ve got an SL-6000L and would very much like to help test the new release. I’ve used OZ since 3.5.1 and am currently running the RC.

  27. Nicon 17 Jan 2006 at 09:44

I have a SLC 1000 and can support testing of features like bluetooth mobile phone, bluetooth headset, bluetooth gps connectivity.

  28. realitygapson 17 Jan 2006 at 09:52

I have an 5500, 860, 3100 ready to test any images you send my way…
    Good luck with the release!

  29. macabroon 17 Jan 2006 at 09:58

Here be another willing victim to test 3.5.4 on collie (sl-5500) who has been anxiously waiting for your new release. Let me know if there is something I can do. I have lost count on the number of times I have flashed this device over the last 5 years!

  30. GROG (Jeff)on 17 Jan 2006 at 11:38

I’ll volunteer my poodle (5600) for testing.

  31. Paul Hedderlyon 17 Jan 2006 at 12:27

I have a C750 (will sell at some point) and a C3100 - would love to be on your testers list.

    Cheers!
    Paul

  32. marco cappolion 17 Jan 2006 at 15:03

I have a 5500 and would like to test and if possible bugfix new release

  33. Cesaron 17 Jan 2006 at 15:47

One more victim, er, tester for 5500 :)

  34. congrioon 17 Jan 2006 at 15:53

i would like test and bug report images from 6000L

  35. Hrwon 17 Jan 2006 at 16:56

Wow! I’m suprised how much people are ready to do testing. As long as machine which I use to do builds will get up (need resetmonkey) I will prepare images for borzoi (SL-C3100). Collie images are ready and some of you got them already.

I have one fix (opie-console again) already.

    Current queue:
    - collie (SL-5000/5500) - images done
    - borzoi (SL-C3100)
    - tosa (SL-6000)
    - poodle (SL-5600)
    - akita (SL-C1000)
    - c7×0
    - spitz (SL-C3000)

this can change if more testers arrive - I build in order of testers number.

  36. akingon 17 Jan 2006 at 17:43

I’d like to test a GPE 64-0 version for the 5500. Thanks!

  37. Chrison 17 Jan 2006 at 18:50

I’ve got a SL-C1000 and I’d be happy to help with testing

  38. Ycroson 18 Jan 2006 at 00:09

    Hi,

I’ve got a C3000 and I’m interested it testing this release - as well as the 2.6 release later on.

  39. Matthewon 18 Jan 2006 at 00:11

    I have a CL-860 I can test OZ/Opie on.

  40. wiit_rabiton 18 Jan 2006 at 02:07

I have an SL-5600 along with Linksys WI-FI card to use for test.

My main interests are use in engineering environment; remote desktop, wireless sync, PDF support, etc…

Thanks for 3.5.3, works very well !

  41. blockeron 18 Jan 2006 at 06:20

i have a c3000 and would like to test, thanks!!

  42. Olivier Bergeron 18 Jan 2006 at 07:43

Looks like openzaurus attracts lots of attention ;) Great.

  43. Eric De Vitoon 18 Jan 2006 at 08:25

    I am a new owner of a SL-C1000 and ok (impatient ;-) ?) for testing 3.5.4 release …

  44. Hrwon 18 Jan 2006 at 12:39

    Images for all machines released.

I mailed each of you with info. If I missed someone (or mail will get in space somewhere) then please contact me: test354@hrw.one.pl

  45. Hrwon 18 Jan 2006 at 14:47

    Some stats:
    - images takes 459M of disc space
    - building took 12G of disc space
    - sources used take another 1.2G of disc space
    - I spent nearly two days on building it.

Thx goes to Koen for account on fast machine which I used.

I hope that images will get good testing and if something is to fixing then give me info what is fscked. I will probably test c7×0 images on my C760 in next days. Collie builds works quite good on my SL-5500.

  46. Holgeron 18 Jan 2006 at 17:08

    Hallo,

I have big interrest of testing images for Zaurus 5500 and 3100. I am a student and I will write my diploma thesis about networking stuff on the Zauri.

I can tell you more details via E-Mail.

    Regards,
    Holger

  47. Olivier Bergeron 18 Jan 2006 at 17:58

    Thanks for the images.

What recomendations would you give on issue tracking ?

Maybe we can track bugs posted in the tracker with specific tags, or dependance to some special ticket ?

I also propose that we review the proposed release notes in parallel of these tests. Is http://oe.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/OpenZaurusReleaseNotes the correct place ?

  48. anton 18 Jan 2006 at 18:35

Here a SL-C860 waiting to test bluetooth and wi-fi (hostap).

  49. Hrwon 18 Jan 2006 at 20:25

Please report bugs in OE bugtracker - mark them as ‘OpenEmbedded/Distribution/unspecified’ and add that this is against ‘Hrw test images’ in bug comment.

I also created http://oe.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/OpenZaurusReleaseNotes354 page in OpenEmbedded wiki for making release notes.

You can also mail me with suggestions/fixes but I prefer getting all suggestions/errors via bugtracker - this way someone else will also see the problems.

  50. Olivier Bergeron 18 Jan 2006 at 20:33

http://bugs.openembedded.org/show_bug.cgi?id=496 still there on akita… and definitely deserves fixing IMHO ;)

  51. muchtallon 18 Jan 2006 at 21:15

If you’re still looking for testers for the SL-5600, I volunteer.

  52. Steveon 19 Jan 2006 at 03:13

    testing OpenZaurus 3.5.4…

During last days I built OpenZaurus 3.5.4 images for all machines. It took dwo days, 12 gigabytes of disc space but was worth it.

So many users signed for testing - much more then I expected - this release will probably get more testing then any befor…

  54. lawon 19 Jan 2006 at 08:30

    hi hrw,

could you please send me the link for the collie images.

    thanks.

  55. malikon 19 Jan 2006 at 10:40

    hello hrw,

i would test it on a tosa machine for bugs etc.

    thanx

p.s. maybe i will visit your home city resp. betlewo

  56. Steveon 19 Jan 2006 at 13:37

If you still need testers I have a 5500.. Im game..

  57. Hrwon 19 Jan 2006 at 14:35

List of updates which I suggest to do after installing.

Updated packages are available in ‘updates’ directory (same place as test images). Please do not spread URL to test images - I want to know who test them.

    opie-console: yet another CVS backport
    - fallback in configuration to fixed font from qpe.conf

    opie-ttf-support: updated to 1.1
    - this version generate line for ‘fixed’ font from first fixed width TrueType font
    - close #441 and #599

    Forgot to mention:

    • PXA255 powered poodle got own kernel (zImage.bin-pxa255) - if you have such one please test does it works with test images.
    • C7×0 kernel with ELPP patch applied to get progressbar on booting like it was in OZ 3.5.3 (zImage-bin-elpp)
  58. Manuon 19 Jan 2006 at 15:12

I’m willing to trash (-> test) my Borzoi (3100) with the image, will gladly post my insights. thanks & great work

  59. crowon 19 Jan 2006 at 15:40

I’d like to help with testing also, if you still need volunteers. I can test SL-5500 and SL-6000L images. Thanks.

  60. Hrwon 19 Jan 2006 at 16:17

Altboot updated is available in updates (thx goes to CoreDump):

altboot: update to same version as is in .dev
    - Fixed a typo preventing any NFS boots
    - Fixed a bug where altboot wouldn’t prompt for the menu but do init 5 instead
    - Cosmetic changes (Thanks to andrewy@#openzaurus)
    - Fixed a bug where pressing enter to start altboot would launch the default option. (Thanks to prh@#openzaurus)
    - Disabled “Copy RootFS” menu item as this part is not finished, yet.

  61. Ralafeon 19 Jan 2006 at 19:17

I have a c3100, and I’m willing to help out with testing.

  62. Hrwon 19 Jan 2006 at 21:48

Added MD5 sums to directory with images - thx Giovanni for reminding.

    Also added bluez-utils into updates:

bluez-utils: added workaround for dtl1_cs CF cards
    - dtl1_cs driver does not support suspend/resume so after resume
we have to eject/insert card to get it working again
    - close #417

    bluez-utils: disable HIDD for OpenZaurus
    - Zaurus devices lack BT usually so users got error/warning message on boot

  63. Hrwon 20 Jan 2006 at 11:57

GPE 2.7 was released yesterday so some of GPE stuff added into updates:

    gpe-what 0.42
    gpe-clock 0.23
    gpe-bluetooth 0.49
    gpe-calendar 0.69
    gpe-contacts 0.43
    libcontactsdb 0.3

    more will follow.

About SD support for 5×00 models:
How hard would it be to reverse engineer that?

  65. Sylvain P.on 20 Jan 2006 at 19:16

    Hi all,
Where can I find the files for a SL-C3100.

    Thanks

  66. amigoon 20 Jan 2006 at 21:27

If you still need more to test it, I would be happy to test it on my C3100

    /cs Amigo

  67. Hrwon 20 Jan 2006 at 21:40

I added some more GPE updates. We also dropped IPSec support from all machines - most users does not use it anyway.

I started cleaning Release Notes pages in OpenEmbedded wiki - I plan to make http://oe.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/OpenZaurusReleaseNotes global page for all releases. Everyone invited to help.

  68. sebastianon 20 Jan 2006 at 22:43

I would also like to test gpe-image on SL6000. If it is needed, please!

  69. ictylon 21 Jan 2006 at 00:48

I would like to help with testing on a 5500.

  70. Headrushon 21 Jan 2006 at 04:30

If you’re still taking testers for the SL5500, I’m in and have lots of time now that I’m unemployed again. :-(

  71. Borison 21 Jan 2006 at 19:55

I’d like to test on a 3100 if tests are still being offered

  72. Gortsleighon 21 Jan 2006 at 22:35

I would love to test Opie on tosa. I will gladly test the other images as well, but have almost no experience with GPE.

  73. Borison 22 Jan 2006 at 02:31

Are there still going to be tests for enlightenment and xfce?

  74. Olivier Bergeron 22 Jan 2006 at 10:55

hrw: maybe it would be interesting to have a Packages.gz generated in the updates dir…

  75. Stéphane Gourichonon 23 Jan 2006 at 14:34

I’m really happy about all that willingness to test. Quite a few opensource project are limited by the amount of undone testing.

OpenZaurus on SL-5500 was good for real PDA (no toy) usage. Alas it has become a daily nightmare since 3.5.3 and http://bugs.openembedded.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54 (oops, DNS down ?).

I have much less time than in the past now that I have full-time job, wife, kid and home loan, but definitely want to check for that bug and a few others before the release, report any change (for the better or the worse) and add any relevant report that may help the debugging process.

So, please count me for SL-5500 I’ll do what I can.

  76. Hrwon 23 Jan 2006 at 16:23

Added some new stuff to updates/ - also added Packages.gz so you can use it as a feed now.

Thx for all feedback which I already got. Especially thx for bugreports which some of you added into bugtrackers.

BTW - I should rather start this ‘testing’ on openzaurus-users/devel mailing list rather then here.

  77. Colmon 23 Jan 2006 at 23:04

Happy to test new OZ with root on 1GB Sandisk SD (if possible)

i’ll be happy to test in my spare time..

  96. Giovannion 30 Jan 2006 at 14:00

    Hi,
it could be a silly thing, but I’m not able to enable wifi on my sl6000 with GPE (ie no ifup shell command).
With OPIE image I have “ifup”, no problem there.

  97. sfgreg2006on 30 Jan 2006 at 14:23

I have SL-5600 (poodle) and I’d like to test the new release for OZ. As I mentioned in a recent post, I ran into problems in several areas with 3.5.3, and I’m anxious to see the fixes and new features is 3.5.4. Thanks, Greg

  98. koenon 30 Jan 2006 at 20:29

Giovannice: use ’su -’ instead of ’su’, of the ‘root terminal’ icon on your desktop to get ‘ifup’ in your $PATH

  99. Brunoon 31 Jan 2006 at 02:43

I’d be happy to test OZ on collie if it is still possible.

I had left a previous post though it wasn’t approved (it said pending and never turned up posted) and said it was pending approval by moderator. Any reason why?

    Thank you.

I’m glad to hear it! Good luck with everything! ;o)

    Cheers!

    Thanks.

If you need more SL-6000 testers, I’d be happy to help out.

  104. Borison 31 Jan 2006 at 19:53

The GPE 3100 test2 image works for the most part, what different from test1?

  105. Bill Saunderson 31 Jan 2006 at 20:22

Based on CoreDumps review and the fact that for some reason my 3.5.3 reassigned my root password and I cant login anymore, I’d love to test the Collie(SL-5500) version of 3.5.4 RC.

Can you send me the link please?

(for testing I have 3 SD memory cards, several CF memory cards, a CF Wifi adapter, and a CF GSM/GPRS(RTM-8000) cellular modem card, oh yeah the standard USB cradle)

  106. Hrwon 01 Feb 2006 at 09:22

I prepared newer images in NEW-test2/ directory for all machines. I prepared changelog so you can check what was updated (mainly GPE and kernel stuff).

Hi, I would like to test the last 3.5.4-RC on my sl-c860, and I will do so on a sl-c3000 as soon as I will have it.
Please, can you give me an URL to download the last snapshot, I will do my best to send reports :)

    Regards

NB: I just had my Z, so now I’m about to test the 3.5.3 and old 3.5.4-RC

  115. Thirrouardon 02 Feb 2006 at 01:56

Ho yeah, I forgot to mention, I want to test OPIE with an ASUS wifi card (WL-110) and few compact flash

  116. Craig Davison 02 Feb 2006 at 02:47

I’d be willing to test 3.5.4 on my Collie. I have a Wi-Fi card & a 128 MB CF card to test with.

  117. Thirrouardon 02 Feb 2006 at 03:42

So far I did try the old 3.5.4-RC and what can I say:
the system is nice and quite functional…BUT!…something realy anoying, the Fn key in not working, so I can’t copy and past AT ALL (I didnt found any menu to do so)!
and also all the problems resulting of the lack of Fn key (many key not a vailable directly or at all).
the screen seems like refreshing slowly so I can see it “vibrating”. I don’t know if it’s a known probleme… anyway I never had this with others ROM (pdaXrom, sharp, cacko)
the wifi work just find, far better than with others rom! once configured, it just do everything by itself.

  120. Thirrouardon 02 Feb 2006 at 13:23

I’ve tested the 3.5.3 and the probleme I did had don’t seems to come from the RC, because I still have them on this stable release…
    I’ve post a topic here:

  126. Christian Waltheron 03 Feb 2006 at 08:17

I would like to test the 3.5.4 RC-Images, too. My Zaurus is a 5500G.
Just recently I figured that there are still many bugs in 3.5.3 that I was annoyed about in 3.5.2, so I’m eager to drop some bug reports (and even a few patches if wanted maybe.)

    Thanks

  129. testHrwon 03 Feb 2006 at 17:25

Do you know that there are 95 testers with 106 Zaurus machines in total? Quite nice list.

In Monday/Tuesday I will probably build test3 + updates for test2. If someone will have problems with WiFi then please test with test1 images - I forgot to rebuild wifi drivers for kernels used in test2.

Things which will be in test3:
    - smaller busybox (some things remvoed as they are rarely used and are in separate packages)
    - fixed keyboard repeat under 2.6 on c7×0
    - few GPE fixes
    - usbd0 on 2.4 machines set to static IP (same as in SharpROM)

  130. Blazeon 03 Feb 2006 at 18:19

Hi, I have been running the initial 3.5.4-RC for weeks and can now help test with feedback the sl-c1000 if desired.

  131. Christian Waltheron 03 Feb 2006 at 22:15

I might missing a few pieces of information here, but I can’t find OEs Bugtracker. I tried bugs.openembedded.org but I get an “could not be found” message. This might be an issue with my ISPs DNS-server.

I installed the latest GPE-Image. Updating the feeds doesn’t seem to be possible for x11 and gpe, the URL listed doesn’t exist, neither did changing it to 3.5.4-RC.

  132. wcon 04 Feb 2006 at 01:16

Will APM problems be addressed in test3 ?

As I hopefully will receive my SL-3100 (borzoi) next week, I’m already looking for an OZ version which I can install. As far as I have seen, only 3.5.4 beta runs on that machine. Is that correct? If so, I’d really like to try those versions.

For what it’s worth, I blogged the install of 3.5.3 at http://silmaril.ie/cgi-bin/blog#pdainst and noted some stuff which you might what to fix if you have time:

    1. Is there any way the boot/install log can be tee’d into a file?
    2. ‘Get time from network’ should be grayed-out when no network card is present.
    3. Add a ‘Loading…’ popup or progress bar so users don’t get worried [during “Personal Details” pause]
    4. Add opie-mail and konqueror or opera at least, and add mail config to the startup script. Either fix konqueror (it’s very close) or cut a deal with opera. Fix the dropping of site data from opie-ftp. Fix bug in opie-mail IMAP where it fails to delete mail from server.
    5. Fix sdmgr to notify tray applet that SD card is inserted.
    6. Ensure CF card used for flash gets added to pcmcia/config.opts if it’s not already in pcmcia/config.
    7. Fix cardmgr so it behaves normally for cards found in pcmcia/config and pcmcia/config.opts and doesn’t ask for them to be configured.
    8. Fix card detector to default to Activate.
    9. Is there a problem with the config applet writing to the config or config.opts file?
    10. Fix /etc/ipkg.conf to use the right repo directory names.
    11. Make wget in ipkg display progress.
    12. Make ipkg produce a usable icon for installed binaries.

And I have an SL-5000 with a cracked screen but otherwise running OK. Is there

I failed to get 3.5.3 working fine, but 3.5.4RC was good for me. But now images for 3.5.4RC are not available, so I will be glad to be a tester.
