Borzoi (3100) testing image with 2.6 kernel

OpenZaurus team November 8th, 2005

Our kernel hacker Richard Purdie prepared both a opie-image and gpe-image for Borzoi (aka SL-C3100) for testing. It uses the 2.6.14-git3 kernel from OpenEmbedded repository - a development kernel. Its also built against the development branch and not the release one as it uses several more recent packages.

Download from here and tell us how it works (feed not provided for testing images - only kernel modules will be provided).

UPDATE: You may need to repartition the microdrive to get it working. Borzoi could have a different partition scheme compared to Spitz (SL-C3000) which we based the borzoi image on (lack of borzoi users in OZ team). OpenZaurus boots from first partition on the microdrive and this needs to be fairly large to make things work (say approimately 75MB+). You will need to repartition the microdrive before flashing an image.

Sound: use that script to load kernel modules. We will add autoload for them later.

UPDATE: images were removed - thanks for testing.

    Ok, repartitioned and installed.
    - Opie works fine.
    - WLAN (DLINK) works fine.
    - my Billinton Bluetooth Cards doenst work (no driver for 2.6)
    - no sound, but got a short docu from developer, will try tomorrow.
    - usbnet not tested

    will test GPE image tomorrow.

    A small test :
    -Opie works well
-CF LAN card works well (Buffalo LPC-CF-CLT)
-During the first configuration steps after reboot, we can
choose the main city to set the timezone (Paris for me), but the
city time app crashed (so I selected Berlin instead). This happend when I use the stylus to choose the continent an countrycity in the list. It happend as well after the initial configuration steps, when I launch the city time app manually.
-Can’t find how to activate the usb storage fonctionality of the Zaurus (use it as an external USB hard disk).
-USBNET don’t work for me (don’t know if it is a problem on openzaurus or in the configuration of my desktop computer)
-When I try to reboot, the Zaurus stops itself and I must remove the battery to reset it (the reset button does not work and when I have the Z connected on the external power, I have not the orange led light).
-The screen integrated icons on the right (or bottom depending of the screen orientation) of the screen (home, mail …) are not working.
-Konqueror reloads a lot of time the page (tested on www.linuxfr.org)

    That’s it for now

    Oh, I forgot…
the sdcard (I used to reflash the zaurus) does not work for me.

  4. Matthiason 09 Nov 2005 at 08:50

Opie Image: usbnet doesnt work (i think its a module problem, and i cant get modules without usbnet :)

Opie: keyboard repeat is to fast (you press the key only for miliseconds and the repeat starts)

    should i bugzilla these bugs?

  5. Hrwon 09 Nov 2005 at 09:46

USB Client functionality (so usbnet, usb-storage mode) is not included in 2.6 kernel yet - work on it is progressing.

To get sound you need to load all snd-* modules (ALSA).

Icons on right/bottom screen part are not supported.

Keyboard repeat thing is something which we have on all 2.6 Zauruses but we used to it..

WPA is not working. Will check a updated wpa_supplicat / hostap-driver later (there ist the very old 0.2.6 in the image).

  7. Lancillottoon 11 Nov 2005 at 15:24

I installed now, it is the only running on SL-C3100, nor the 3.5.4-RC1 can be installed for me! :(

I encoured also in the same problems of the above user.

When a more stable version will be released for the 3100?

Thank you very much for now!

Any chance that a 2.6 version will be released for the C1000 (Akita)?

  9. Civilon 12 Nov 2005 at 14:41

    GPE:
Screen setup - doesn’t work. No autorotate.
Bug with suspend (sometimes screen goes white with a gray line on it. If you press on/off button twice - everything backs to normal.)

  10. biozon 12 Nov 2005 at 15:23

    repartitioned and installed is OK

    • Gpe works fine
    • CF WLAN card pretec no work
    • no sound

    Bioz

  11. Hrwon 12 Nov 2005 at 22:58

    bioz:
    - could you show what ‘cardctl ident’ show for that card?
    - to get sound you need to load all snd-* modules (info added into post)

    Lancillotto:
    - this is first release - when we get info how it works (no borzoi in OZ team) then we will be able to fix bugs and release better release.

    Dave:
    - chances for akita/2.6 exist - if borzoi build works then akita one should too (they use the same kernel (but with different options))

hrw: next weeks till end of year i can test everything for you on borzoi. hope to have a bb + monotone working next week.
in the moment i see only usb-client as showstopper. all other thinks are working.
testing for special hardware (bluetooth CFs, wlan CFs, etc) has to do by as many users as can :)

    regards

    hi,

I can’t install the kernel modules from
    ‘http://www.rpsys.net/openzaurus/temp/borzoi-3.5.4ish/modules/’

i have loaded the modules on the zaurus. But ipks say’s:

    root(at)spitz:~/Documents# ipkg install kernel-module-snd-2.6_2.6.14-git3-r10_borzoi.ipk
    Clearing state_want and state_flag for pkg=kernel-module-snd-2.6 (arch_priority=0 flag=16 want=2)
    Configuring e2fsprogs-e2fsck
    ln: /sbin/fsck.ext2: File exists
    ln: /sbin/fsck.ext3: File exists
    postinst script returned status 1
    ERROR: e2fsprogs-e2fsck.postinst returned 1
    Nothing to be done
An error ocurred, return value: 4.
    Collected errors:
    Cannot find package kernel-module-snd-2.6.
Check the spelling or perhaps run ‘ipkg update’

    what is wrong?

    Hello,

I have a question about installing opie on my Borzoi. Above it is mentioned that I need to repartition the microdrive, how do I do this?

    Thanks,
    Mayads

Nota. I used the original Sharp ROM when I have done that.
Be aware that the original ROM needs the original disk layout and filesystem (fat). It won’t boot if you leave the hard-disk layout you created for OpenZaurus and you want to reinstall the original ROM (you must repartition your hard-disk again in this case) !!

    -Open a terminal
-Unmount all your hard-disk partitions (ie. umount /dev/your_partitionX)
-Use fdisk to repartition (ie. fdisk /dev/your_hardisk)
    -Save the changes
-Reboot to flash the new system as you usually do

In response to Dave V who said :

    > Any chance that a 2.6 version will be released for the C1000 (Akita)?

FYI, 2.6.14-git3 seems to build and boot correctly on my SL-C1000 (rebuilt from openembedded)… but there may still be problems with the screen calibration…

I am trying to access http://www.rpsys.net/openzaurus/temp/borzoi-3.5.4ish/ in order to download the files for testing the image. But it reports a HTTP 404 error. Is there any other sever where I can download the files or could you just send them to me?

    Cheers,
    Luis
