OpenZaurus for C3000 and C1000 released

mickeyl April 30th, 2005

I’m proud to present OpenZaurus 3.5.3/Opie for the Sharp SL-C1000 (Akita) and Sharp SL-C3000 (Spitz) devices. Special thanks go to the OZ developers Jose Bernado Silva and Jonathan ‘Noodles’ McDowell who were leading the Akita (C1000) and Spitz (C3000) porting efforts.

Cheers,

I have not used a Zaurus since the original SL5000D model, but I recently bought a C3000 because the form factor and the 4GB drive were too tempting to pass up. I’ve used OZ in the past and was happy to see this beta for the C3K. I loaded only last night, so these are initial observations.

It seems that the only way to suspend is from the menu. The ON/OFF switch does not suspend, nor does closing the hinge.

I can’t get my D-Link DCF-660W card to work. It worked on the Sharp ROM.

Network configuration seems limited compared to the settings tool in the Sharp ROM. I can’t find a way to have different network profiles, i.e., fixed IP address in one place, DHCP in another, etc. Maybe it’s in there and I just don’t know about it.

I did the install without my D-Link DCF-660W inserted. Worked fine. After the first boot i insert the WLAN card and it gets recognized as WLAN0. I configure it and Wellenreiter II and WWW browser work perfectly.

After reboot the card gets recognized as ETH0. WLAN0 is disconnected. Wellenreiter doesn´t work anymore. I get the error: cant set IF ETH0 into monitor mode. Any ideas on that?
Can i write protect the /etc/network/interfaces somehow and keep so the working state with the WLAN0 setting?

Kismet also doesnt like the WLAN card to be ETH0.

“Install local Pakages” freezes the machine.

Besides that - it looks very promising to me after the first few hours of testing. Thanks for that release !

Cheers lads! I am so glad for this release, I will try it as soon as I will have a bit of time. I have been an uber-happy user of the OZ on my SL5500 and really am glad for a release for the C3000.
    Keep up the good work!

At installing the harddisk hdd1 could not formated. This is the thing that the original Sharp-Rom will be on the SL-C 3000. My first try to use another Rom was the Cacko-ROM for the C-3000 and its now impossible to use Openzaurus on my Sl C-3000.

    Greetings

Everything works except the wireless, suspend and the package manager blows up quite easily.

Other than that very suprised this first release works as well as it does.

    Good job!

Once I got it installed on my Akita (C1000) it worked (one file was corrupt on download, thanks for the MD5 sums), a few issues:

    • The arrow pad seems to be set inversely to the screen rotation (when the screen is in landscape mode, the arrows work as if the screen was in portrait mode)
    • The right hand shift key does not shift.

Seemed very good for a first release, 3.5.4. should kick.

    Thanks.

I was looking to pick up a SL-3100 through dynamism, but it doesn’t seem like there are any well functioning distros for the 3000-series just yet.

If anyone has heard of any success stories, I would definately like to hear about them.

If anyone has heard something or knows a timeline estimate of when openzaurus/familiar/angstrom will be stable-ish, if they could post a reply in this blog entry, I would very much appreciate it.
